Choosing the music for your event is as important as choosing the musicians. Here are some things to consider.
Music for receptions, private parties and other events should appeal to an audience of a variety of ages and interests. If I am playing as a solo pianist for a private party, I will typically perform a blend of popular music from the big band era through today as well as Broadway favorites and jazz.
That said, I have also played at parties where the client has preferred a narrow range of musical styles. For example, some past parties have been mainly Sinatra, mainly Springsteen, and mainly Broadway. The choice is really up to you. If you request special music, I will prepare it at no extra charge.
Music for wedding ceremonies includes the following four main areas:
► Prelude music - Guests arrive. There may be a special piece at the end that brings in family members or certain members of the wedding party. ► Processional - This can be for the entire wedding party or just for the bride ► Special music - This can be music with religious meaning, a song with a special personal significance, or music for an event such as the lighting of candles. ► Recessional - Music for the exit of the wedding party.
For ceremony music, the choice is up to you. I have played processionals using everything from the traditional wedding march (here comes the bride) to At Last (the Etta James rendition).
It is your ceremony and the music you choose becomes part of your memory of that special day. Often times, couples will choose to blend styles. For example, I can think of one wedding where I played piano arrangements of popular music chosen by the couple as guests arrived, a traditional march with a trumpet player as the processional, a piece of special music sung by a friend of the groom during the candle lighting and another traditional wedding selection with the trumpet player as the recessional. |
